How to: Send a password-protected fax.
Solution:
In the 'Compose New Fax' dialog box, click 'Next', type the phone number and recipient's name, and click 'Next'. Click 'Options...', click 'Security', and select the 'Password-protected' radio button. Type the password twice and click 'OK' twice. Click 'Next' and attach the file to fax.
NOTE: Microsoft Fax applies security only to faxes that have been sent as editable files. Rendered faxes cannot be secured.
1) Click the 'Start' button on the Windows Taskbar to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Programs' and select 'Accessories'. (The 'Accessories' submenu appears.)
3) Select 'Fax' and select 'Compose New Fax'. (The 'Compose New Fax' dialog box appears.)
NOTE: If 'Fax' is not present on 'Accessories' submenu, use 'Add/Remove Programs' in Control Panel to add this program from the original Windows 95 installation diskettes or CD-ROM.
4) (Optional) Specify the dialing location and properties:
a) Click 'Dialing Properties...'. (The 'Dialing Properties' dialog box appears.)
b) Select the dialing location from the 'I am dialing from' drop-down list.
NOTE: If you need to define a new location, click 'New...', type the name of the new location in the 'Create New Location' dialog box, and click 'OK'.
c) Type the area code in the 'The area code is' box.
d) Select the country from the 'I am in' drop-down list.
e) If you need to dial a number or numbers to access an outside line, type the number(s) in the 'To access an outside line, first dial' box.
NOTE: There are two boxes: one for local calls and one for long distance calls. You can fill in one or both of them, if applicable.
f) (Optional) To dial using calling cards:
1] Select the 'Dial using Calling Card' check box. (The 'Change Calling Card' dialog box appears.)
2] Select the desired type of calling card from the 'Calling Card to use' drop-down list.
3] If required, type the calling card number in the 'Calling Card Number' box.
NOTE: If the calling card number is not required, the box will be grayed out.
4] Click 'OK' to close the 'Change Calling Card' dialog box.
g) If the location has call waiting:
1] Select the 'This location has call waiting' check box.
2] (Optional) To disable call waiting, select the number to disable the call waiting in the 'To disable it, dial' drop-down list.
NOTE: If the correct number is not listed in the 'To disable it, dial' drop-down list, type the correct number in the box.
h) Select the 'Tone dialing' radio button or the 'Pulse dialing' radio button to specify the type of dialing to use.
NOTE: Select pulse dialing only if this is the only dialing type available.
i) Click 'OK'. (The 'Compose New Fax' dialog box reappears.)
5) Click 'Next'.
6) Type the fax number manually:
a) Type the recipient's name in the 'To' box.
b) Type the recipient's fax number in the 'Fax #' box.
c) Select the 'Dial area code' check box if you need to dial the area code.
NOTE: If sending to multiple recipients, click 'Add to List' and repeat step 6) for each recipient.

7) Click 'Next'.
8) Specify whether a cover page is to be included:
a) Select the 'No' radio button to send the fax without a cover page.
b) Select the 'Yes. Send this one' radio button and select the cover page to include from the list box.

9) Customize sending options and set the password:
a) Click 'Options...'. (The 'Send Options for this Message' dialog box appears.)
b) To set the transmission time, do one of the following:

1] Select the 'As soon as possible' radio button to send the fax immediately.
2] Select the 'Discount rates' radio button.
3] To send the fax at a specific time:
a] Select the 'Specific time' radio button.
b] Click 'Setup...' and type the transmission time.
c] Click 'OK'.
c) Select the 'Editable only' radio button in the 'Message Format' group.
d) Click 'Security...'. (The 'Message Security Options' dialog box appears.)
e) Select the 'Password-protected' radio button and click 'OK'. (The 'Fax Security - Password Protection' dialog box appears.)
f) In the 'Password' box, type the appropriate password.
g) In the 'Confirm Password' box, retype the password.
h) Click 'OK' and click 'OK' again.
10) Click 'Next'.
11) (Optional) Type the message subject in the 'Subject' box and any notes in the 'Notes' list box.
12) (Optional) Select the 'Start note on cover page' check box to start the notes on the cover page.
13) Click 'Next'.
14) Attach the appropriate file to the fax:
NOTE: The file attached to the fax is the document which will be printed on the receiving fax machine.
a) Click 'Add File...'. (The 'Open a File to Attach' dialog box appears.)
b) Select the drive where the file to be attached is stored.
c) Select the appropriate folder and click 'Open'.
d) Select the file to be attached and click 'Open'.
15) Click 'Next'.
16) Click 'Finish'.
